The Tip of the Red Giant Branch Distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud

چکیده
We present the I–band luminosity function of the red giant branch stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using the data from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey (Zaritsky, Harris & Thompson, 1997). Selecting stars in uncrowded, low– extinction regions, a discontinuity in the luminosity function is observed at I0 = 14.54 mag. Identifying this feature with the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), and adopting an absolute TRGB magnitude of −4.05 ± 0.04 mag based on the calibration of Lee, Freedman & Madore (1993), we obtain a distance modulus of 18.59 ± 0.09 (random) ±0.16 (systematic) mag. If the theoretical TRGB calibration provided by Cassisi & Salaris (1997) is adopted instead, the derived distance would be 4% greater. The LMC distance modulus reported here, 18.59±0.09, is larger by 0.09 mag (1σ) than the value that is most commonly used in the extragalactic distance scale calibrated by the period–luminosity relation of the Cepheid variable stars. Our TRGB distance modulus agrees with several RR Lyrae distances to the LMC based on HIPPARCOS parallaxes. Finally, we note that using the same MCPS data, we obtain a distance modulus of 18.29± 0.03 mag using the red clump method, which is shorter by 0.3 mag compared to the TRGB estimate. Red variables in the OGLE-II data base – II. Comparison of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds
We present period–luminosity relations for more than 3200 red variable stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud observed in the second phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-II). Periods of multiply periodic light curve solutions combined with the single-epoch 2MASS JHKS magnitudes, reveal very similar distributions to those for the Large Magellanic Cloud in Paper I. The average of 14 recent measurements of the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) implies a true modulus of 18.50 ± 0.02 mag, and demonstrates a trend in the past 2 years of convergence toward a standard value. The distance indicators reviewed are the red clump, the tip of the red giant branch, Cepheid, RR Lyrae, and Mira variable stars, cluster main-sequence fitting, supernova 1987A, a...

The distance to the Fornax dwarf galaxy using red clump stars, and the discrepancy between red clump and tip of the red giant branch distances ABSTRACT I determine a distance to the Fornax dwarf galaxy using stars in the red clump and at the tip of the red giant branch. They are in very good agreement, with µ 0 = 20.66 mag. Comparing the magnitudes of the tip of the red giant branch and of the ...

We present period–luminosity relations for more than 23 000 red giants in the Large Magellanic Cloud observed by the OGLE-II microlensing project. The OGLE period values were combined with the 2MASS single-epoch JHKS photometric data. For the brighter stars we find agreement with previous results (four different sequences corresponding to different modes of pulsation in asymptotic giant branch ...
